GNABSE Supports Salvation Army's "Angel Tree Program"

The Greater Nashville Alliance of Black School Educators participated in the 2010 "Angel Tree" program by donating toys for boys and girls for the annual Christmas toy drive. Liz Turner, Corporate Angle Tree Coordinator, said that with the contribution of GNABSE and others, The Salvation Army was able to serve more than 14,000 individuals during the pass Christmas season. GNABSE was proud to take part in this worthy endeavor.

Annual Education Forum - for administrators, teachers and parents

The Annual Education Forum was hosted by the Greater Nashville Alliance of Black School Educators. The forum was held October 31, 2009 from 8 AM to 12 PM at the Church of Christ at Jackson Street. The church is located at 1408 Jackson Street in Nashville, Tennessee.

The theme for this year, in conjunction with the national theme "Education is a Civil Right" was "Educating Our Children to Become Tomorrow's Leaders."

The forum consisted of a keynote speaker and breakout sessions for administrators, teachers and parents. Educators (retired and active), parents and community leaders attended this event.  The keynote speaker was Dr. Michael Freeman, Vice President of Student Affairs at Tennessee State University.  Jason Meriwether, Assistant Dean of Student Life, at Fisk University conducted the break-out session for parents. His topic was, "Every Student Success Story is YOUR Success Story." The teachers break-out session was led by Mr. John Norris, Consultant for Nashville Public Schools. The administrators break-out session was facilitated by Dr. Myron Oglesby-Pitts, Assistant Professor of Education at Belmont College. Her topic was, "The I Factor: Transferring Resilience to Leadership."

As part of the forum, all MNPS schools that made AYP for the 2008-2009 school year were recognized. We were proud to salute them for this accomplishment. Dr. Jesse Register and Gracie Porter, member of the school board participated in this event.
